Range
Range is the distance a yacht can travel on a single fuel load at a stated cruising speed, quoted in nautical miles and always paired with the speed at which it was calculated. It is the headline number for ocean-crossing capability and depends on fuel capacity, displacement, hull form and propulsion.
What is yacht range?
Range is the distance a yacht can travel on one full tank of fuel at a stated cruising speed, expressed in nautical miles (nm). A figure without its paired speed is meaningless: the same yacht might cover 6,000nm at 10 knots and barely 1,500nm at 20 knots.
Range is normally quoted at the yacht's most efficient cruising speed, which sits well below maximum speed. For a displacement motor yacht, that economical speed is typically 10-14 knots; for a planing yacht, 22-26 knots. Moving from displacement to planing speed can multiply fuel consumption per nautical mile by three to five times.
Indicative figures:
- Classic 50m+ displacement motor yacht: 4,000-7,000nm at 12-14 knots. Comfortably crosses the Atlantic with reserve.
- 40-50m planing motor yacht: 1,500-3,000nm at 22-26 knots. Coastal and short-passage profile.
- Explorer / expedition yacht: 6,000-10,000nm or more at 9-11 knots. Designed for unsupported ocean crossings.
Range derives from fuel capacity, displacement, hull resistance and propulsion efficiency, typically with a 10% reserve built in.
Why it matters for yacht owners
Range, paired with cruising speed, is the single most honest indicator of where a yacht can actually go. A buyer comparing a 45m planing yacht with 2,500nm at 24 knots against a 45m displacement yacht with 5,500nm at 12 knots is choosing between two entirely different cruising profiles: Mediterranean coastal hopping versus genuine ocean capability.
For owners planning transatlantic crossings or remote itineraries, range determines whether the yacht crosses on her own bottom or is shipped on a heavy-lift vessel. Always read the figure with its stated speed.
Key facts
- Range is always expressed in nautical miles at a stated cruising speed; the speed pairing is non-negotiable.
- Classic 50m+ displacement motor yachts typically achieve 4,000-7,000nm at 12-14 knots.
- 40-50m planing motor yachts typically achieve 1,500-3,000nm at 22-26 knots.
- Explorer and expedition yachts are designed for 6,000-10,000nm or more at 9-11 knots.
- Fuel burn rises non-linearly with speed; planing speeds can increase consumption per nm by 300-500%.
- Range is calculated from fuel capacity, hull resistance, displacement and engine SFC, normally with a 10% reserve.
- The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) route Las Palmas to Saint Lucia is approximately 2,700nm.
- Range degrades in head seas, strong currents and at full-load displacement.

What is the range of a typical superyacht?
A classic 50m+ displacement motor yacht typically achieves 4,000-7,000nm at 12-14 knots, enough to cross the Atlantic with reserve. A 40-50m planing yacht typically achieves 1,500-3,000nm at 22-26 knots. Explorer yachts are designed for 6,000-10,000nm or more at lower speeds.
Why is range always quoted with a speed?
Because fuel burn rises sharply and non-linearly with speed. The same yacht might cover 6,000nm at 10 knots and only 1,500nm at 20 knots, because doubling speed can multiply fuel consumption per nm by 3-5 times.
Can a planing yacht cross the Atlantic?
Most 40-50m planing yachts cannot make a direct transatlantic crossing on their own fuel, because their range at cruise (1,500-3,000nm) is below the 2,700nm ARC route from the Canaries to the Caribbean once reserves are factored in. They normally cross by heavy-lift transport.
What is the longest-range yacht type?
Explorer and expedition yachts, designed for unsupported long-distance cruising. They combine a full-displacement hull, large fuel capacity, robust construction and modest cruising speeds (9-11 knots) to achieve ranges of 6,000-10,000nm or more.
