Galati Shipyard,officially known as Damen Shipyards Galați, is one of the largest and most important shipyards in Romania and is part of the Dutch Damen Shipyards Group..

Key information includes:

  • History: It was originally established in 1893 as the "Mechanical Construction Works and Iron and Bronze Foundry", later transforming into the "G. Fernic et Comp Shipyard". The first documentary attestation of naval activities in the area dates back to 1565.
  • Takeover by Damen: The Dutch group Damen became the majority shareholder in March 1999, an investment that led to the significant modernization and development of the yard.
  • Activity: The yard specializes in the construction of a diverse range of ships, including military vessels (over 30 delivered to navies worldwide, including NATO and EU countries), patrol vessels, offshore vessels, ferries, dredgers, launch vessels, luxury yachts and tugs. All products manufactured since the Damen takeover have been destined for export.
  • Importance: It is the largest shipyard on the Danube and one of the largest production sites within the Damen Group, covering 55 hectares and employing approximately 1,500 people, plus subcontractors.
  • Recent status: In 2025, the shipyard obtained the status of a military shipyard, thus becoming an important production base for defense ships.
