Bridgedeck
The bridgedeck is the deck level of a superyacht that houses the wheelhouse and primary navigation station, typically the third level above the waterline. It commonly carries the bridge wings, a sky lounge or owner's suite, the captain's cabin and an aft outdoor area used for alfresco dining or a jacuzzi.
What is the bridgedeck on a superyacht?
The bridgedeck is the deck level of a motor yacht on which the wheelhouse - the primary navigation and ship-control station - is located. On a conventional three- or four-deck superyacht it sits above the main deck and the upper deck, and below the sundeck, making it the third deck level above the waterline. The wheelhouse is positioned forward on the bridgedeck to give the captain unobstructed sightlines.
Beyond the wheelhouse itself, the bridgedeck typically carries several distinct zones. Bridge wings extend port and starboard from the wheelhouse for direct view down the side of the hull. The captain's cabin is conventionally located on the bridgedeck for fast access to the wheelhouse. Inside, the aft portion is usually a sky lounge or, on raised-pilothouse and owner's-deck layouts, the owner's suite. Aft of the interior the bridgedeck extends into an exterior deck which on most 50m-plus motor yachts hosts an alfresco dining table, a jacuzzi or a lounging zone.
A point of terminology: the bridge is the room (wheelhouse); the bridgedeck is the entire deck level. The closed compound bridgedeck is UK and European convention; the two-word form bridge deck is more common in US sources. The two refer to the same space.
Why it matters for yacht owners
For a buyer, the bridgedeck is one of the clearest readouts of how a yacht has been laid out. The choice between using the aft bridgedeck as a sky lounge, an owner's private terrace or an upper-tier guest space materially changes the yacht's social rhythm and its charter appeal. Layouts that place the owner's suite on the bridgedeck give the principal party a private lounge, study and outdoor terrace one full deck removed from guest circulation.
The bridgedeck is also where the captain works. Wheelhouse design, bridge-wing visibility and captain's-cabin location bear directly on safe operation, refit value and crew retention.

What is the bridgedeck on a superyacht?
The bridgedeck is the deck level on which the wheelhouse is located. On a conventional three- or four-deck superyacht it is the third level above the waterline. Beyond the wheelhouse, the bridgedeck typically carries the bridge wings, captain's cabin, sky lounge or owner's suite, and an aft exterior area used for dining or a jacuzzi.
What is the difference between the bridge and the bridgedeck?
The bridge is the room - the wheelhouse - from which the captain navigates. The bridgedeck is the entire deck level on which that room sits. The bridge is one space inside the wider bridgedeck.
Is the bridgedeck always the third deck on a yacht?
On most conventional motor yachts above 40m the bridgedeck is the third level above the waterline. On smaller or differently configured layouts the wheelhouse can sit on a half-deck or directly on the upper deck. It is best defined by function - the level housing the wheelhouse.
Is it spelled "bridgedeck" or "bridge deck"?
Both are correct. The closed compound bridgedeck is the convention in UK and European usage. The two-word form bridge deck is more common in US sources. This page uses the closed compound.
