Deck
A deck is a single horizontal level of a yacht, stacked from the waterline upward. A modern superyacht typically carries four to six decks - lower, main, upper, bridge and sundeck - each with a defined function, from crew quarters and machinery at the bottom to alfresco dining and helipad space at the top.
What is a yacht deck?
A yacht deck is one of the horizontal floor levels that divide a vessel vertically. On a superyacht the decks are stacked and named by position, not by floor number, and each level carries a specific blend of guest, crew and technical functions.
From the keel upward the typical stack runs: lower deck (crew cabins, galley back-of-house, engine room, tender garage, beach club), main deck (owner's suite forward on most modern layouts, formal salon and dining, aft deck for outdoor lounging), upper deck (guest staterooms or sky lounge, additional alfresco dining), bridge deck (the wheelhouse, captain's cabin, often a private owner's deck on larger yachts) and sundeck (the uppermost open area with jacuzzi, bar, sunpads and frequently a helipad-rated foredeck or aft pad).
Terminology overlaps cause confusion. "Boat deck" refers to the level where the tenders are stowed; "owner's deck" describes a private level reserved for the principal on yachts above roughly 70 metres; and "beach club deck" sits on the lower deck at the stern and folds open to sea level.
Decking surfaces are traditionally laid in Burmese teak, prized for grip, weathering and appearance. Synthetic alternatives - Esthec, Bolidt PlasDECK, Flexiteek, Permateek - are gaining share on weight, sustainability and maintenance grounds.
Why it matters for yacht owners
Deck count is one of the strongest drivers of internal volume and gross tonnage on a given length, and therefore of price, charter rate and crew headcount. A four-deck 50-metre and a five-deck 50-metre look similar on paper but feel like different boats - and cost differently to run.
Deck layout also drives charter appeal: guests pay for outdoor space, so a generous sundeck, a usable aft deck on the main level and a functional beach club deck materially lift weekly rates. On the cost side, teak deck refits are one of the largest recurring line items in a refit budget - expect €1,500 to €2,500 per square metre of replaced decking, and a full re-deck on a 50-metre can run into seven figures. Poor deck flow, weak deck loading on a sundeck spa or non-compliant helipad markings will all surface in pre-purchase survey and flag-state inspection.
Key facts
- Standard superyacht stack from bottom up: lower, main, upper, bridge, sundeck.
- A 50-metre motor yacht typically carries four deck levels; 70-metre-plus yachts run five to six.
- Owner's suite usually sits forward on the main deck; on yachts over 70 metres it often moves to a private bridge or owner's deck.
- Burmese teak remains the traditional decking; ~6mm boards laid over a sub-deck with caulked seams.
- Teak material cost ~£285 per m² for 6mm planks before labour.
- Synthetic alternatives Esthec, Bolidt, Flexiteek and Permateek cut weight and CITES exposure; pricing roughly €150-€1,000 per m² depending on product and design.
- Full teak re-deck cost: ~€1,500-€2,500 per m² installed.
- Helipad-rated decks must meet MCA REG Yacht Code Annex 6 (formerly LY3) for load, obstacle clearance and markings.

What are the different decks on a superyacht?
A modern superyacht is normally arranged across four to six decks. From the bottom: the lower deck holds crew quarters, machinery and the tender garage; the main deck carries the owner's suite, formal salon and aft deck; the upper deck adds guest staterooms or a sky lounge; the bridge deck houses the wheelhouse and often the owner; the sundeck sits on top with the jacuzzi, bar and sunpads.
What is the difference between main deck and upper deck?
The main deck is the principal entertaining level - formal salon, dining room, owner's suite forward on most layouts and the aft deck for outdoor lounging. The upper deck sits directly above and is typically more relaxed: a sky lounge, additional guest staterooms on some designs, and a covered alfresco dining area. The main deck is the principal social space on the yacht; the upper deck is the everyday retreat.
What is the best deck material for a superyacht?
Burmese teak is still the benchmark for grip, appearance and resale value, and remains the default on most yards' flagship builds. Synthetic alternatives - Esthec, Bolidt, Flexiteek, Permateek - are increasingly specified where weight, sustainability or CITES compliance matter, and they perform well in hot climates. The right answer depends on use profile, budget for refits and the owner's view on natural materials.
How many decks does a typical superyacht have?
A 40-metre motor yacht generally has three usable decks; a 50-metre carries four; a 70-metre runs to five; and most 80-metre-plus yachts have five or six, sometimes more once you count the beach club deck and a half-level owner's deck. Sailing yachts tend to have fewer decks for the same length because of rig and stability constraints.
